Matthew Slocombe

I am a design teacher and developmental psychology PhD researcher at Birkbeck College, University of London. I work in the Developmental Neurocognition Lab where my colleagues and I use a variety of research methods to investigate how and why children cognitively develop in different ways.

I also work with the Centre for Educational Neuroscience where we collaborate with teachers and other education professionals to translate our research into educational practice. My research investigates how children learn with analogies from both a basic and applied perspective. I conduct basic research into the developmental and cognitive mechanisms of analogical learning and then use this to investigate different ways of teaching abstract concepts to children, with a current focus on teaching science concepts. I also have broader interests in children’s language, conceptual and creative development and collaborative models of education research.
